Roma aeterna Salzburg Whitsun Festival, 21 – 24 May 2021

Excellent news from the Festspielhaus. Cecilia Bartoli celebrated enormous success in Vienna with the same programme that had already won over the Festival audience in Salzburg this summer. Individual tickets can be bought from 14 December onwards.

Cecilia Bartoli has come up with a plethora of musical ideas for the coming Whitsun Festival: she focuses on her native city, for the diverse metropolis of Rome has inspired poets, composers, film-makers and poets for centuries and more.

The staged work will be George Frideric Handel’s first oratorio Il trionfo del Tempo e del Disinganno, in a new production directed by Robert Carsen. The allegory of Pleasure (Piacere) will be sung by Cecilia Bartoli. Gianluca Capuano, whose Alcina was a great success at Whitsun in 2019, conducts the orchestra founded by Cecilia Bartoli, Les Musiciens du Prince-Monaco. The premiere is scheduled for 21 May at 7 pm at the Haus für Mozart; the second performance for Sunday, 23 May at 5 pm.

Bartoli has christened the orchestral concert at the Großes Festspielhaus on Saturday at 11 am Poema sinfonico: it will feature works by Ottorino Respighi and Felix Mendelssohn. Zubin Mehta conducts the Orchestra del Maggio Musicale Fiorentino; Maxim Vengerov is the soloist.

La clemenza di Tito,Wolfgang A. Mozart’s opera seria, will be performed in a concert version at the Haus für Mozart on Saturday evening. Charles Workman takes on the role of Emperor Tito Vespasiano. Sesto, who is so in thrall to the much-desired Vitellia that he is willing to have his closest friend Tito killed, will be embodied by Cecilia Bartoli. The artistic director of the Whitsun Festival is also joined on stage by Mélissa Petit in the role of Servilia, Lea Desandre as Annio and Peter Kálmán as Publio.

Entitled Dixit dominus, a sacred concert will take place on Whitsunday, featuring works by Arcangelo Corelli, George F. Handel and Domenico Mazzocchi at the Felsenreitschule. John Eliot Gardiner conducts his English Baroque Soloists and the Monteverdi Choir.

The oratorio Cain, overo Il primo omicidio was composed by Scarlatti in 1707. It will be performed at the Mozarteum Foundation on Whitsun Monday at 11 am under the baton of Philippe Jaroussky.

The 2021 Salzburg Whitsun Festival ends with another opera in concert: Giacomo Puccini’s Tosca will be performed at the Großes Festspielhaus on Monday at 3 pm by a spectacularly star-studded cast: Anja Harteros, Jonas Kaufmann and Bryn Terfel will sing the leading roles of Floria Tosca, Mario Cavaradossi and Barone Scarpia. Cecilia Bartoli will be heard in the role of the “Pastorello”, which she first sang at the tender age of ten at the Opera in Rome. Zubin Mehta conducts the Orchestra e Coro del Maggio Musicale Fiorentino and the Salzburger Festspiele und Theater Kinderchor.

Heinz Beck, the chef of the restaurant La Pergola in Rome, holder of three Michelin stars, and the winery Ômina Romana of the Börner Family in Velletri near Rome present a gala dinner at the Felsenreitschule on Sunday at 8 pm, in the presence of the 2021 Salzburg Whitsun Festival artists.
